So it's summer and the networks are on summer break running reruns and reality TV. It's hot and humid and not a particularly inviting day to be outside. You're trying to figure out what to do tonight, I'm here to say that there IS something on TV. Our local producers aren't taking the summer off, they continue to produce great programming for the St. Paul community.

Tonight on Channel 15 we have a new episodes of Our World in Depth, Baby Blue Arts, Words of Peace, and Libertarian Viewpoint.

The evening kicks off at 5PM with a new episode of Our World in Depth, "True Cost of Coal" pt. 2. If you missed part one you can catch it at their website http://ourworldindepth.org/.

Fresh Filmmakers 2011

If you are a filmmaker working on a short narrative there is a grant you may want to apply for. IFP Fresh Filmmakers 2011 will facilitate the production of one short narrative film (ten minutes or less) directed by a filmmaker who has been making films for no more than five years.

The winning filmmaker will receive a $1000 stipend, mentorship by some of MN's most accomplished filmmakers, professional services from casting through distribution, and high-end camera and equipment rental.

Why Community Television

People are saying that with YouTube and other online video services, the need for community television is fading. I disagree. YouTube helps us get a wider audience for our videos, but many of our efforts have a local focus and need a local outlet.

"Hyper-local" is the new goal in newspapers, radio and TV, with many media outlets revamping their coverage to make sure they cover their local communities. Many are asking their audience to contribute to the story, such as Minnesota Public Radio, which calls it Public Insight Journalism.

Well, that's what community access television has been providing to the public for years. We give the community access to the tools so they can tell their own story. And we don't sit and judge whether the result is "newsworthy" or fits somebody else's ideas of what's important. We allow the community to represent itself.

An article in the Pioneer Press Monday talked about the perils facing community access television. I think the article was incomplete. What you didn't read about in the story is the youth programs in many access centers that teach young people media literacy, communications and story-telling skills in addition to production skills. You didn't read about the classes, workshops and other hands-on expertise offered to increase the production value of the programs our members make. Those are things YouTube and other media can't offer.

And as long as the Digital Divide remains and people go without access to high-speed Internet, cable television remains the most economical, widespread and convenient way for people to watch television that informs, empowers and connects them to their communities.

Talent Workshop

Bill Cooper has been involved in the film & television business for over 20 years primarily as an actor and spokesperson. On Saturday, June 4th Cooper will lead a workshop giving great advice on how to improve your on camera presence. Whether you are a talk show host interviewing guests or an on air spokesperson/ talent that needs to deliver a message to viewers this workshop could offer you some solid tips on how to improve your on camera delivery. This three hour workshop will be very interactive and include a chance to show a clip of your on air skills in order to receive feedback from Bill on ways to improve it. This class is limited to 20 students, so please make sure to reserve your spot. In addition to Cooper's career as an actor, he is also an acting coach plus has extensive experience producing, casting and directing through his production company Basset Creek Productions.

Cost of the class for members is $35 and $50 for non SPNN members.

Application Deadline for MN Film and Video Grant Program

The Jerome Foundation makes grants to not-for-profit arts organizations and artists in Minnesota and New York City to support the creation, development, and production of new works by emerging artists. Jerome Foundation supports emerging professional artists who are the principal creators of new work, and:
who take risks and embrace challenges;
whose developing voices reveal significant potential;
who are rigorous in their approach to creation and production;
who have some evidence of professional achievement but not a substantial record of accomplishment; and
who are not recognized as established artists by other artists, curators, producers, critics, and arts administrators
July 15th is the Application Deadline for the 2011 Minnesota Film and Video Grant Program. The Minnesota Film and Video Grant Program places emphasis on projects in their early stages of production. The program does not fund retroactively, so completed projects or projects near completion do not qualify for support.

International Documentary Challenge

The International Documentary Challenge returns to Hot Docs in 2011!

Now in it’s 6th year, The International Documentary Challenge returns to the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto. This year's challenge takes place March 3-7, 2011 with registration now open. Hot Docs dates are April 28 - May 08, 2011.

The Doc Challenge is a timed filmmaking competition where filmmakers have 5 days to make a short non-fiction film (4-7 minutes.) All of the registered participants make their films during the same time period (March 3-7, 2011) and are required send off the film by the deadline.

Filmmakers are assigned a theme (past themes include Dreams/Nightmares, Change) and must choose between 2 assigned documentary genres (such as Character Study, Music, 1st Person, etc.) These two requirements provide a challenge to filmmakers, as it will shape the content and direction their film takes.

The top 12 films, determined by a panel of judges, premiere at Hot Docs where the Winners are announced. Three major awards (with cash prizes) will be presented: The American Documentary/P.O.V. Award, The Documentary Educational Resources (DER) Award and the Best Film Award (presented by the Documentary Channel.) Additionally, viewers may screen the films and vote for an Audience Award winner on the Doc Challenge website. After the premiere, there are additional theatrical screenings in major cities, national television exposure (9 films from 2010 were selected for national broadcast on the Documentary Channel) and a DVD release of the best films.

September 30, 2010 (Saint Paul, MN)…..Springboard for the Arts and mnartists.org are pleased to announce the featured artists for the second season of Community Supported Art (CSA) and will begin selling member shares to this innovative program on Monday, October 4, 2010. We are pleased to announce we have doubled the number of shares available to 100 and doubled the number of artists/collaborations to 18!

What is Community Supported Art? Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy seasonal food directly from local farms. With the same buy-local spirit in mind, mnartists.org and Springboard for the Arts are joining forces for a similar endeavor to support local art, artists and collectors.

The fall CSA artists were selected by representatives from Springboard and mnartists.org, as well as two artists with family ties to farming. Karl Unnasch, a featured visual artist from the summer CSA program, works from a studio on his parent’s farm near Chatfield, MN. Dessa Darling, spoken word poet and hip-hop artist, has recently been working on writings inspired by her mother’s foray into farming in western Wisconsin.

The selected artists will receive a commission to assist in the production of new work to be distributed through the CSA program. Interested consumers/collectors can purchase a share from Springboard for the Arts and in return receive 2 “farm boxes” of locally produced artwork at two fall pick up events. Each share will included at total of 9 original works for the season (4 at the first event and 5 at the second). Each share will contain a carefully curated mix of mediums, disciplines, value and concepts…as well as a few surprises, just like a garden farm box. One of the intents of the program is finding familiar names and forms mixed with new and unexpected pieces in each share. Featured works could include anything from a pressing of a vinyl 7” record, a small run of screen-prints, or functional porcelain dishware, to limited-edition photographs, tickets to shareholder-only performances, or letterpress editions of a poem or short story. Each member share will also include “bumper crop” of additional artwork and arts opportunities. The pick-up events will be at local art and food sites, and will give shareholders the opportunity to meet the artists individually, as well as enjoy food and music from local luminaries.

Member shares cost $300 for the three-month season and can be purchased on our website, springboardforthearts.org, or by contacting Andy Sturdevant at 651-292-4381 or info@springboardforthearts.org. Sales of member shares begin on Monday, September 27, 2010 and will sell out fast.

The goals of the CSA program are to support artists and to create an engaged community of local arts supporters. CSA supports artists: in the creation of new work, to establish relationships with local collectors and patrons, and to participate in the launch of an exciting new model of art support and distribution. CSA Share member benefits include multiple works of art from local emerging and mid-career artists at a fantastic value! Additionally, CSA Share members have the opportunity to develop relationships with the local artists and art community, discover new artists, explore a variety of disciplines and support artists’ careers and a vibrant community. Our CSA model is being replicated in communities all over the country. Our last season was featured on Minnesota Public Radio and PBS’s NewsHour, and both Minnesota Monthly and METRO magazines selected the program as a year-end “Best Of”.

30 CTEP AmeriCorps members serve across Saint Paul and Minneapolis teaching about technology literacy for social, civic and economic empowerment with low-income families, New Americans, and residents with disabilities. Members surveyed Frogtown residents and contributed to community meetings for the creation of a free bus-service in Frogtown that could help youth participate in technology literacy programming in the neighborhood.

Expanding Technology Resources for Ex-Offenders
Created online resources for public computer center staff in assisting ex-offenders with finding employment.

Educating Public about Electronic Waste
Attended multiple community events to educate the public on the dangers of electronic waste, and implemented e-waste curriculum to be used a public computer centers across the Twin Cities

Local Digital Divide Documentary
Members interviewed a number of local public computer center staff, clients, and advocates to create a media product on the importance of digital inclusion

Each project will present for 15 minutes and then have a 5 minute Q&A with members of the public.

St. Paul Neighborhood Network experienced technical issues over the weekend. There was a major computer failure Sunday evening in the automation system that runs our channels which took many program off the air. Regular programming on all SPNN channels resumed at about 7PM Sunday evening.

We also have been experiencing technical difficulties with the reception of the Classic Arts programming. We are working with Comcast to solve this problem.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. We understand how important SPNN programing is for the community.

Instructor Noah Keesecker will cover research and application preparation techniques for grants, fellowships, scholarships, and residency programs available to individual artists. Plus he will talk about finding and maintaining partners in the community as a strategy for expanding your audience and appealing to potential funders. Oprah is looking for the next talk show for her network and two of our members are auditioning. One already has their video up and the other will be going up shortly. You can view and vote as many times as you wish. The votes count toward who makes it into the finals; even though the producers have the final say, the votes definitely count.

Donna Chicone of The Dog Show and Ron Shumpert of Ron Shumpert presents have both made audition tapes and are looking to be the next big thing. Currently Donna has her audition tape online and you can vote by clicking on the link. Voting continues until July 3. Once Ron has his audition live I will post the link.

Producing a Religious Program

Have you thought about taping your church services? Do you have a spiritual message that you'd like to share on television? If you have been thinking about producing a religious tv show and not sure how to go about doing it, then consider taking this workshop. Bonnie Schumacher will cover the basics from what you need to know in terms of SPNN membership rules, tips for building your production team, what style of programming works best for you and she'll offer suggestions for distributing your show to other access centers or posting shows over the internet. The tips offered may also be helpful for folks already producing a series but want new ideas of how to strengthen or enhance what they are already doing. This class has a suggested donation of $10 per person. This class will be held Saturday, June 19 at 10AM.

With labor day upon us, it is time to get back into the swing of things. I was off on maternity leave for most of the summer and access reduced our hours on Tuesdays to allow for prep time for staff. As we head into Fall we once again will go back to our normal hours. We will be open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from noon-10PM, Wednesdays 6PM-10PM, Saturday 9:30AM-5:30PM, and Sundays noon-5:30PM.
